Today I met my cousin for the first time. She's 10 and an aspiring authoress. We were told by my aunt - her grandmother - of one another and the writer-connection. She had the chance to go to Wonderland but chose to come meet me instead.
No pressure.
I will confide in you and the world wide web that I have absolutely no idea how to mentor a young writer. I shared with her some of my feelings about writing and some of my passions. I wasn't too concerned with doling out advice. Just keep writing and keep everything you write. I gave her a copy of one of my (age appropriate) novels. I was delighted to see that she was totally drawn in by my story - even though it's still in an early draft.
We went of a walk and she told me some of her stories. We went swimming and talked about character development and getting published and about swimming. It was strange. I'm used to being the student and here I was suddenly the teacher. It isn't a role I'm comfortable in, so we just talked mostly. I shared my dreams and stories and listened to her dreams and stories.
She told me at dinner that she was glad she came to see me rather than go to Wonderland. How wonderful. I must have done something right. Can't think what it was so I'm not sure I could do it again.
I had a delightful day.
